Haryana Cricket Association ambiguous about inviting Kapil

Chandigarh, Sept. 30 (PTI): The Haryana Cricket Association, which is hosting the October 8 ODI between India and Australia here, is ambiguous about inviting former captain Kapil Dev to watch the match.

“I cannot tell you now,” HCA Secretary and former BCCI president Ranbir Singh Mahendra told a press conference here today when asked if Kapil Dev, who has now aligned with Indian Cricket League, would be invited.

Kapil also has a close connection with the venue of the forthcoming match, the Sector 16 cricket stadium here, as it his homeground and the ‘Haryana Hurricane’ had spent his youth playing here.

Chandigarh Administration’s Finance Secretary S K Sandhu said there was no plan to name a block or stand of the 25,000 capacity stadium after Kapil.

“It is our policy not to name anything after anyone within the grid sector, under which Sector 16 cricket stadium falls,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mahendra said that final touches were being given to the stadium, which will be hosting a international match after a gap of 14 years, the last one being in 1993.

The match will be played on the relaid pitch and while one scoreboard will be electronic the other one will be manual.

Sandhu informed that HCA had hired the stadium from the Administration for hosting the match and would be paying for it. He also said that some upgradation work had to be advanced in view of the ODI being held here.

“So far, we have spend about Rs 4-5 crore on upgrading the stadium. Next year, we intend to add a pavillion block and install floodlights,” he said.
