ICC Twenty-20 World Cup kicks off

KATHMANDU, Sept 11 – The ICC Twenty-20 World Cup kicked off Tuesday night with South Africa playing against West Indies in the opening match at their home turf at the Wanderers in Johannesburg.Hosts South Africa won the toss and decided to bowl first in the inaugural match. 

The teams are drawn with minnows Bangladesh in Group A, with two of the three going through to the next stage of the tournament.

In the 2003 Cricket World Cup tournament held in Cape Town, South Africa lost to the Windies team which cost them a possible second round place. However, South African squad is in high spirit having played well against title contender’s Australian side in a warm match with their convincing eight wicket victory prior to the start of the tournament.

Similarly, Windies team can also rely on its bowlers, after its 35-run victory over formidable New Zealand. 

The South African squad, with Jacques Kallis out of it squad this time, have Graeme Smith (captain), Mark Boucher, Abraham de Villiers, Herschelle Gibbs, Justin Kemp, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Makhaya Ntini, Vernon Philander, Shaun Pollock and Johan van der Wath.

Ramnaresh Sarwan (captain), Dwayne Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Fidel Edwards, Chris Gayle, Daren Powell, Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul, Marlon Samuels, Devon Smith, Dwayne Smith are in the West Indies squad.
