ICL to lure more Pakistan players

The Indian Cricket League (ICL) has plans to sign up more top Pakistan players.Having already roped in Inzamam Ul Haq, Mohammad Yousuf, Abdul Razzaq and Imran Farhat an ICL source revealed it aims to sign up some of the top performers from Pakistan’s domestic cricket league.

Some of the club level players in Pakistan are very talented and as good as some of the international players but have been repeatedly ignored by the national selectors.

Like in Indian cricket, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) too have neglected domestic players. Incidentally, Pakistani cricketers who are unable to make it to the national team have been struggling for a livelihood.

Many talented players were even forced to migrate to Gulf countries virtually giving up cricket.

Only Pakistan players who are contracted by (PCB) earn well from the game. A Pakistan Grade A player gets close to Rs3million (Dh181,000 approx) a year while a cricketer who fails to make it to the national team will not be able to even earn Rs100,000 (Dh 6000 approx.) from a whole year of domestic cricket.Pakistan captain Younis Khan’s statement that he might consider offers from ICL if he can be assured he can play for the country has sent shockwaves in PCB circles.

The ICL is likely to approach the Pakistan players with a clause stating that they will be free to play for Pakistan even if contracted to them.

It is understood that one of the reasons that PCB quickly dropped the disciplinarian charges against Shoaib Akhtar is owing to the fear that he too might join the ICL, if punished.

Many fringe players and even current players may consider joining ICL owing to PCB’s treatment towards Inzamam Ul Haq and Abdul Razzaq. Both these players were humiliated towards the end of their career despite their huge contribution towards the country.

PCB is set to conduct the selection trials for the Quaid E Azam trophy. Top ten performers from each association will appear for the trials. Twenty-seven top cricketers are now undergoing training in Lahore for selection into the Pakistan A team to play Australia A in September

The camp is scheduled to conclude on September 2 when the final 15 will be announced. The ICL officials may have a look at some of the players who will arrive for the trials and also those who may not get selected to the Pakistan A team to play for ICL.
